Emergency fund?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
An \u2018emergency fund\u2019 is a stash of money that you tap into only in case of an unexpected event that life throws at you. Examples – company layoffs, medical bills, home repair, appliance repair, car repair etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I recently had such an event in summer of 2021 when my 20+ year old AC died in peak summer. The minimum cost to replace the AC was around $5000. Luckily, I could pay off the expense using the money saved in my emergency savings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why do I need one?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
For peace of mind! Yes, you can always pay off most of your bills using credit cards but if you already carry credit card debt, then you don\u2019t want to add to it and pay more interest. The fund serves as backup so that you can be ready when life throws those curve balls at you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
How do I start saving?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
You can contribute a certain amount every paycheck towards your emergency fund. Better to do this automatically. Employers typically allow you to split your pay into multiple direct deposit bank accounts. You can also add in your tax refund or any bonuses that you receive so that you reach your savings goal sooner. After you\u2019ve built your emergency fund, you can start contributing to other investments<\/a>. Also, remember to replenish your fund after you’ve used up some of the money for a legitimate emergency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Where do I save it?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Keep the fund untouched and hidden from your own eyes. Protect it so that you don\u2019t spend parts of it on things that you don\u2019t need<\/a>. My suggestion – save the money in a separate savings account which is not linked with your credit card or debit card.
